Getting started Xamarin, Mono on Windows computer [on hold]

I am a long time developer in the VS windows world. I wish to build an app
with Mono either using Xamarin (have the demo version) or VS 2012 which I
own. I see all sorts of examples for mac, iOS or android but wish to
create a basic ASP.NET application not using Microsoft libraries.
Preferably MVC. I ultimately want to use service stack. How do i get
started?
I have a fresh VM built for doing this. I installed Xamarin but noting
else. I don't know where to start? If I d/l Mono, how do I set up the
references? Are the namespaces the same? I really don't know how to start.
I would like this to run on windows to start. So my specific question is...
How do I build an ASP.NET app ie hello world, using mono libs that runs on
windows? The examples in the documentation only shows non windows
solutions.
